Robert Berry has been working as a post-doctoral researcher at the Wolfson Centre since 2001 on the following projects:

  • 2001: Quality in particulate manufacturing, EPSRC funded
  • 2002: Research assistants industrial secondment, EPSRC funded
  • 2003–06: Development of an economic powder flow tester, Defra funded
  • 2010–13: Development of a toolkit for the control of flow properties, Defra funded. 

Robert took on a project management role for the latter two projects. 

Since 2004 he have been employed as a consultant engineer to powder handling and processing industry, initially working in the laboratory undertaking characterisation tests and performing design calculations. Today he takes on all aspects of consulting work from writing project proposals, undertaking site visits to diagnosing process problems and writing reports.

Over the last year Robert has delivered approximately £30,000 of consultancy income in his own name, as well as providing significant contributions to many other projects delivered by colleagues R Farnish and MSA Bradley. Over the last five years, Wolfson Centre consultancy staff have delivered approximately 150 projects generating approximately £1 million of income. 

Robert has been delivering lectures on the subject of bulk solids to final year systems engineering degree students since the Wolfson Centre located to Chatham in 2005, as well delivering a range of subjects on The Wolfson Centre short courses to industrial clients

Robert's research interests include:

  • Characterising the bulk flow properties of particulate materials
  • Understanding the links between the bulk flow properties and primary particle properties
  • Design of hoppers and silos for reliable flow particulate materials
  • Design of feeding devices (screws) for controlled dosing of particulate materials.

He has played a lead role in the development of the Brookfield PFT – the first commercial powder flow tester developed for use in industry. This instrument was developed through the 2003–06 Defra-funded research programme. Having developed the Brookfield PFT, which allows industrial users to measure flowability, the next question is usually 'what can be done to modify flowability'. This is the subject of a current control of flow properties research project.

A recent challenge has been how best to handle and feed fibrous or flakey materials such biomass, which is topical with the current drive for renewable energy generation.

Funded research projects

The Defra funded Toolkit for controlling the flow properties of blended powders project is a follow-on from the development of the Brookfield PFT. The toolkit aims to develop software and models to assist those working in powder processing control the flow properties. The research explores the effects of particle size, shape, liquid content and common free flow additives.

To address challenges faced by power generators, The Bio4 flow project has been developed by a consortium of four European universities with complementary skills relating to biomass handling and processing for bio-refining or combustion. The consortium partners are the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (lead with experience in fractionation), the University of Greenwich (flow property characterisation), the University of Salerno (silo design for reliable) and Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (combustion and dust explosions). 

The Bio4Flo consortium received a grant of EUR17,600 from Processum (a Swedish industrial club) in July 2011. The research objective is to highlight the shortcomings of existing characterisation techniques, with two conferences produced and a journal paper in preparation. It is hoped that the consortium will be able to find future funding from the European framework programmes.
