Ivan is a Lecturer in Sustainable Property Design, Construction and Operation at university of Greenwich mainly teaching in the Sustainable Building Design and Engineering, MSc programme. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (Mechatronics) and a MSc in Energy and Engineering (Bioclimatic Design of Buildings) from the Faculty of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Later, he obtained a PhD in Energy and Engineering from the Energy Institute at University College London (UCL), by researching into new methods to improve energy performance of building and its systems. During his doctoral studies he developed an exergoeconomic-based optimisation software for retrofit designs of building energy systems.

Ivan spent three years as Research Associate in Imperial College London funded by the Newton Fund fellowship. In this role he developed new simulation and optimisation energy systems modelling frameworks. Part of the research considered the techno-economic aspects of building energy systems and its potential impact on achieving global and national decarbonisation targets.

Research / Scholarly interests

My research expertise lies in areas such as building performance simulation and modelling, building energy design, low-carbon building design, solar building design, optimisation, thermodynamics, data analysis and machine learning. My main research interest focuses on the optimisation of passive and active building systems under an energy/exergy evaluation combined with the utilisation of high-performance optimisation approaches.

Other research interests are focused on investigating the importance of using diverse design optimisation techniques combined with thermodynamic laws to techno-economically optimise building physical characteristics and building energy systems as well as investigating the strength and limitations in using machine learning and neural networks techniques in the building design process.
