Lottery grant to help improve the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people

The University of Greenwich, the Metro Centre and Ergo Consulting have jointly won funding for research into the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people. An award of £500,000 from the Big Lottery Fund Research Programme will be used to fund a national survey across England of 15,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people aged 16 to 24.

Life-saving research at University of Greenwich listed in top ten discoveries

A research breakthrough at the University of Greenwich has been named as one of the ten most important discoveries to be made in a UK university over the past 60 years. A poll of UK academics has recognised the university's work on controlling the tsetse fly in Africa, which is helping to combat the fatal disease, sleeping sickness.

University launches new research centre for children, schools and families

A new research centre that draws upon psychological research to help reduce social and educational exclusion, raise youth aspirations and enhance family, community and social well-being will be launched on Friday, June 18. The University of Greenwich Research Centre for Children, Schools & Families is directed by Pam Maras, Professor of Social and Educational Psychology, and will provide research advice and consultancy in partnership with external organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Pharmacy lecturer's mission to improve cancer treatments

Medway School of Pharmacy lecturer Dr Nathalie Lavignac has received a grant to improve drug targeting in cancer patients. Traditional delivery of cancer drugs results in side-effects because the drugs used to kill the cancer cells also kill the good cells.

University of Greenwich leads international biofuels project

A leading expert in biofuels, Professor Patricia Harvey, of the University of Greenwich, is helping develop new sustainable sources of green energy for three countries in Africa. Oil extracted from the dark, oval seeds of the long-lived flowering jatropha tree and marine microalgae, which thrive in the warm waters off the shores of Namibia, are among the alternative renewable energy options being investigated.
