Overview

If you have the ability but not the qualifications required to apply for our three-year BA Hons Hospitality Management programme, this four-year programme will provide you with the stepping stone you need.

Put your abilities to good use by embarking on a hospitality management degree ranked first in London in the Complete University Guide 2017 league table. This programme has been developed to meet the demand for entrepreneurial, creative and strategic managers in the international hospitality industry.

Course structure

It begins with a foundation year that will give you a solid grounding from which to progress to degree-level study. You will gain a thorough introduction to business and marketing and an understanding of ethics, enterprise and leadership. You will also learn essential computing, communication and academic writing skills, as well as the ability to manage your studies independently.

You will explore this diverse industry through international case studies, practical group work, business problems and interactive workshops. You will study topics including tourism entrepreneurship and technology, operations management, event production, financial planning and revenue management, human resources and marketing.

After your first year, you will study the same courses as those on our three-year BA Hons Hospitality Management programme.

Foundation year

The foundation year is designed to give you:

  • A thorough introduction to business and marketing
  • Essential computing skills
  • Improved communication
  • Academic writing skills
  • An understanding of ethics, enterprise and leadership
  • The ability to manage your studies independently.

Degree re-structure

This degree is currently being restructured in collaboration with employers, professional bodies and student feedback. This ensures we develop degrees that are aligned with latest industry trends and gives you the opportunity for subject specialisms. (This is standard UK practice across institutions).

Extra information

Assessment

On this course you will experience a blend of teaching and learning methods. Lectures and tutorials will be used on modules throughout the degree, as well as a combination of directed and independent reading and research activities, and individual and group work. Case studies will be incorporated and computer simulation will be used, where appropriate.

A range of assessment methods will be used across the programme to assess students' knowledge and understanding. Assessments will include a mix of individual and group tasks, such as:

  • Consultancy reports
  • Business plans
  • Dissertations
  • Examinations.

Professional recognition

As part of your degree, you will qualify for free membership of the Institute of Hospitality.

It provides you with the opportunity to:

  • and take part in the institute's annual networking event, Passion4Hospitality.

You will also have access to e-resources, such as hospitality textbooks and distinguished academic journals to benefit your degree progression.

Careers

Graduates from this programme have the same career opportunities as those applying to and graduating from our three-year BA Hons Hospitality Management programme.

This degree was designed in consultation with employers and includes opportunities to gain significant industry experience through practical work placements. Graduates leave with skills in marketing, human resources, revenue management, technology and events management, making them highly employable in the rapidly growing hospitality sector.

Work placement

You can gain the insight and practical skills that employers seek in graduates. Our Employability Office will assist you in securing a placement before the sandwich year. Working with over 200 companies our team also offer a range of mentoring schemes and networking opportunities.

The sandwich year (work placement) will appear as a 30 credit course on your Diploma if completed successfully.

Internship

In addition to a placement, you can also do internships during your summer breaks. These will appear on your graduate diploma, showcasing your experience to employers.

Experience abroad

You can participate in the Erasmus+ international exchange programme. This will help improve your language skills and give you experience of living and working in another country. The Erasmus+ Scheme provides a grant towards the cost of studying abroad for a year. 

Employability

You will connect with employers through our dedicated Business School Employability Team who focus on developing your employment skills. They also provide you with CV support and will invite you to employment fairs to network with employers and recruiters from industries.

Extracurricular activities

Our Greenwich Employability Passport scheme recognises and rewards your participation in additional activities such as part-time work, volunteering, student societies or industry guest lectures.

Business start-up

You will be encouraged to enter the university's Enterprise Challenge which rewards student entrepreneurship and innovation. Previous winners received a prize of £5,000 for their idea of developing an enterprise and study hub.
