This programme will provide you with a broad knowledge of chemistry and associated practical skills in order for you to become competent to practice in a range of professional environments and to progress to degrees in chemistry.

You will cover the areas of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry. In addition, it provides experience of good laboratory practice and topical investigations.

The HNC Chemistry is available through either of the following modes of study:

  • Taught at the Medway Campus
  • Blended Learning.

The HNC Chemistry Higher Apprenticeship programme has been mapped to the Laboratory Scientist Standard. For more information about the Standard, please visit their website.

On completion of the programme, progression on to the BSc Chemistry Degree Apprenticeship programme is possible.

What you'll study

Entry requirements

Applicants must be employed by a sponsoring organisation. Programme-specific entry requirements apply, as agreed with the sponsoring organisation.

Typical entry requirements for our science apprenticeship degrees are as follows:

80 UCAS points from:

  • A-levels (subjects may be specified by your employer)
  • An appropriate BTEC National award
  • A recognised Access to Science course
  • Other relevant qualifications, if accepted by your employer, including progression from an appropriate Level 3 apprenticeship programme
  • Relevant experience, including experience gained from voluntary activities.

You will also need GCSE in English (language or literature) and maths at grade 4/C, or equivalent qualifications.

If you are an international student, you must have proof of your right to work in the UK, and you must be permitted to undertake the programme within the terms of your visa.

You will be assessed through a combination of exams and coursework.

Professional recognition

This programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). Our chemistry apprenticeships are the first to be accredited in the UK by the RSC.
