Mathematics, BSc Hons (Extended)

Our extended mathematics course will give you the advanced mathematical methods, skills and techniques you need to build a successful career in mathematics.

Topics covered on this extended course include numerical mathematics, problem-solving and mathematical thinking, statistics and the use of mathematical software. If you're interested in teaching, you can apply for the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme, which helps you gain valuable classroom experience.

The course includes an initial foundation year, which provides the skills you need to make the most of your degree. In subsequent years, you follow the curriculum of our three-year course. The degree is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the UK's chartered professional body for mathematicians. In the 2019 Guardian University Guide, our mathematics courses were ranked in the top 10 in the UK.

What you should know about this course

  • The BSc Hons Mathematics (Extended) course includes a preparatory year and helps students access degree study in this subject with a lower entry tariff
  • You will learn to identify and analyse relevant data to solve problems and will acquire IT skills using contemporary mathematical software packages
  • This course allows you to develop skills such as logical analysis, deduction, mathematical modelling, problem-solving and the appropriate application of mathematical concepts

About the course team

You will be taught by an experienced team, which includes senior academics and practitioners with broad industry insights. Trained postgraduate researchers may also contribute to lab/tutorial teaching with the module leader. 

Our research and consultancy work informs academics, and over 90 per cent of the lecturers teaching our undergraduate modules in Mathematical Sciences holds a teaching qualification.

For exemption: If you hold qualifications or courses from another higher education institution, these may exempt you from modules of this degree.

How you will learn

For new and returning students in September, our focus is on making our university environments safe and accessible to everyone.  We’ve prepared a 'blended model' of teaching which means combining face-to-face sessions on our campuses with online lectures. All face-to-face sessions are in line with distancing rules. If students are ill or shielding, we’ll provide all lectures and course materials online.

In a typical week learning takes place through a combination of:

Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Scheduled learning activities may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

The typical student intake per year of Mathematical Science courses averages 80-100. Lectures are normally attended by large groups and tutorials or computer laboratories by smaller groups.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams. Our library and online resources with support your further reading and research.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of scheduled learning activities which will include online lectures, online and on campus discussions, workshops and practical sessions.

If you are studying full time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job (approx. 40 hours per week. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.

Each module you study earns you credits toward your degree. Every credit represents around 10 study hours. So, if you receive 50 hours of scheduled learning activities for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 250 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.

Assessment

On this course, students are assessed by take-home exams, coursework and practice assessments on campus where required.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include 'practice' assessments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

University accommodation is available from just over £100 per person per week (bills included), depending on your location and preferences. Technology: There are no compulsory costs beyond your tuition fees. However, we may recommend that you purchase a backup device (such as a portable hard drive).

Software: We provide licenses for certain software to use on your own computers, depending on your course. This may include Virtual Desktop access, Tableau Desktop, Microsoft Azure Devtools for Teaching (including Visio, Project, SQL Server, etc). You will also have access to Nvivo, SPSS Modeler and SPSS Amos. Any licenses for software outside of our range will come at your own cost.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

You can opt to register on 'sandwich mode', which means you do a one-year full-time paid placement between your second and final year. While on a sandwich placement, you retain your student status and have full support from the university and your tutors as usual. Students are responsible for finding their own placements, though we will support you through the application process.

You can opt to do a 30-credit short placement during your final year. You can either do a Mathematics Work Placement where you work in the industry for one day a week or an Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme (UAS) placement where you work with mathematics teachers in a school or college for one day a week.

Students from Mathematical Sciences have secured placement years at the Department for Work & Pensions, NHS England, NATS, Home Office, HMRC, Department of Health, GSK, Intel and Lloyds Banking Group.

How long is my placement?

Sandwich placements must last for a minimum of 36 weeks full-time, though they can be as long as 13 months. Mathematics Work Placement and UAS placement students work for one day a week for 15 weeks.

What are the financial arrangements?

Sandwich placements are typically paid full-time positions. The salary should reflect the going rate for an entry level role in the relevant industry.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Career opportunities for this course are varied. Most industries are always on the lookout for graduates with intellectual, mathematical and numerical skills that can be applied to a wide range of practical situations. 

You may choose to work in a wide variety of careers in fields such as data science,  mathematical modelling, academic or industrial research, internet technology, the pharmaceutical industry, accounting, banking, the Civil Service, teaching, logistics, consultancy, actuarial science, risk management and marketing.

Are internships available?

Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience, which can include internships and be paid or unpaid. Students are responsible for finding their own internships, though we will support you through the application process.

Do you provide employability services?

Employability activities take place all the time at Greenwich and students are encouraged to take part in as many opportunities as possible. The central Employability and Careers Service provides support for students preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles, such as CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops. 

Each School also has its own Employability Officer who provides specific opportunities relevant to your own course. They work closely with professionals in the industry to ensure you are well-prepared for the workplace and have already begun to build your professional network by the time you graduate.

Academic skills and study support

We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
