Mathematics, BSc Hons (Extended)

Our extended mathematics course will give you the advanced mathematical methods, skills and techniques you will need to build a successful career in mathematics.

Topics covered on this extended course include numerical mathematics, problem-solving and mathematical thinking, statistics and the use of mathematical software. If you're interested in teaching, you can apply for the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme. Aimed at encouraging mathematics teachers, this gives you a chance to gain valuable classroom experience.

The course includes an initial foundation year, which will give you the skills required to make the most of your degree. The study in subsequent years will follow the curriculum of our three-year course. The degree is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the UK's chartered professional body for mathematicians. In the 2019 Guardian University Guide, our mathematics courses were ranked in the top 10 in the UK.

What you should know about this course

  • The BSc Hons Mathematics (Extended) course includes a preparatory year and helps students access degree study in this subject with a lower entry tariff

About the course team

You will be taught by an experienced team, which includes senior academics and practitioners with broad industry insights. Trained postgraduate researchers may also contribute to lab/tutorial teaching with the module leader. 

Our research and consultancy work informs academics, and over 90 per cent of the lecturers teaching our undergraduate modules in Mathematical Sciences holds a teaching qualification.

  • 64 UCAS points from subjects studied at A-level including a pass in A-level Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.
  • GCSEs in English Language and Mathematics at grade C / 4 or above.

How you will learn

Teaching

In a typical week learning takes place through a combination of:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • 1-to-1 tutorials

Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

The typical student intake per year of Mathematical Science courses averages 80-100. Lectures are normally attended by large groups and tutorials or computer laboratories by smaller groups.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you are also expected to dedicate time (around 24 hours per week) to self-study. This may involve further reading and research, preparing coursework and presentations, and preparing for tests and exams. Our facilities are designed to support you in these activities.

You can use Stockwell Street library and online resources to support further reading and research.

Overall workload

If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.

Each module you study towards this degree is worth 15, 30 or 60 credits. These represent around 150, 300 or 600 study hours respectively. If you receive 72 contact hours for a 30-credit module, you should expect to commit 228 hours to independent study to complete it successfully.

In addition, during the week you can also:

  • Attend additional support classes in some modules
  • Attend guest lectures from industry experts
  • Take part in employability and enterprise workshops 
  • Join student societies.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

You can opt to register on 'sandwich mode', which means you do a one-year full-time paid placement between your second and final year. While on a sandwich placement, you retain your student status and have full support from the university and your tutors as usual. Students are responsible for finding their own placements, though we will support you through the application process.

You can opt to do a 30-credits short placement during your final year. You can either do a Mathematics Work Placement where you work in the industry for one day a week or an Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme (UAS) placement where you work with mathematics teachers in a school or college for one day a week.

Students from Mathematical Sciences have secured placement years at the Department for Work & Pensions, NHS England, NATS, Home Office, HMRC, Department of Health, GSK, Intel and Lloyds Banking Group.

How long is my placement?

Sandwich placements must last for a minimum of 36 weeks full-time, though they can be as long as 13 months. Mathematics Work Placement and UAS placement students work for one day a week for 15 weeks.

What are the financial arrangements?

Sandwich placements are typically paid full-time positions. The salary should reflect the going rate for an entry level role in the relevant industry.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Career opportunities for this course are varied. Most industries are always on the lookout for graduates with intellectual, mathematical and numerical skills that can be applied to a wide range of practical situations. 

You may choose to work in a wide variety of careers in fields such as data science,  mathematical modelling, academic or industrial research, internet technology, the pharmaceutical industry, accounting, banking, the Civil Service, teaching, logistics, consultancy, actuarial science, risk management and marketing.

Are internships available?

Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience, which can include internships and be paid or unpaid. Students are responsible for finding their own internships, though we will support you through the application process.

Do you provide employability services?

Employability activities take place all the time at Greenwich and students are encouraged to take part in as many opportunities as possible. The central Employability and Careers Service provides support for students preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles, such as CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops. 

Each School also has its own Employability Officer who provides specific opportunities relevant to your own course. They work closely with professionals in the industry to ensure you are well-prepared for the workplace and have already begun to build your professional network by the time you graduate.

We want you to make the most of your time with us. You can access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
