Hospitality Management (Extended), BA Hons

Gain the skills to become part of the fast-growing hospitality industry with our hospitality management degree. The course begins with a foundation year to get you ready for degree-level study.

Our extended degree in hospitality management is identical to the three-year degree but incorporates a foundation year to prepare you for the rest of your study. Designed to turn students into entrepreneurial, creative and strategic managers, this course aims to kick-start your career in international hospitality.

Among the topics you'll study are entrepreneurship and technology, operations management, event production and event marketing. You'll also have the chance to apply what you've learned on a UK or overseas-based internship.

You should graduate from this course with the key skills and experience needed for a successful career in hospitality management. Potential areas of employment include HR, revenue management, hospitality marketing and guest services.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally apply with the equivalent of 64 UCAS points (or above), plus GCSE English and mathematics at grade C or grade 4.

This might include:

  • Applications from those with an A‐level background if the applicant has two D grades and one E grade (or above) in relevant subjects
  • Applications from those with 64 UCAS points including points from at least two AS-levels in relevant subjects
  • Applications from those with an AS‐level background if the applicant has studied three/four AS subjects and achieved at least three C grades (or above) in relevant subjects
  • Applications from those with an International Baccalaureate (Certificate or Diploma) background if the applicant has at least 20 points arising from at least three relevant subjects
  • Other qualifications, which will be considered on application.

How you will learn

Teaching

In a typical week learning takes place through a combination of:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • 1-to-1 tutorials

Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will also be able to meet your personal tutor. Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.

Class sizes

Average intake per year is up to 10. Lecture sizes are normally 30-240, and seminars/tutorials are 15-30. This varies by module, if shared between degrees.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to dedicate self-study time (around 20-30 hours per week) to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams.

You can use our Stockwell Street library and online resources to support further reading and research.

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, assessments, and field trips. Each credit equates to around 10 hours of study. Contact hours may vary depending on your modules.

In addition, during the week you can also:

  • Attend additional support classes in some modules 
  • Attend guest lectures from industry experts 
  • Take part in employability and enterprise workshops  
  • Join student societies.

Each course has formal assessments which count towards your grade. Some courses may also include ‘practice’ assessments, which help you monitor progress and do not count towards your final grade.

We aim to provide feedback on assignments and to release examination results within 15 working days.

  • Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies. Our Stockwell Street library offers an extensive range of books for loan, as well as access to journals and digital resources.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

Work placements are optional, and you are responsible for arranging your placement with support from the university.

Previous students on the three-year course have secured placement year at Baxterstorey Limited (independent hospitality provider) and Goodmayes Griller Limited (restaurant).

How long is my placement?

Work placements are 9-12 months of full-time paid work. You take this between the second and third years of study.

What are the financial arrangements?

UK placement annual salaries range between £13,000-£18,000 pro rata. Some charity/voluntary work organisations offer travel costs and lunch expenses in lieu of a full salary.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Graduates from this course have the same career opportunities as those applying to and graduating from our three-year BA Hons Hospitality Management course.

This degree was designed in consultation with employers and includes opportunities to gain significant industry experience through practical work placements. Graduates leave with skills in marketing, human resources, revenue management, technology and events management, making them highly employable in the rapidly growing hospitality sector.

Are internships available?

Internships are optional. Students must take internships for a minimum of six weeks full-time. Internships give you the opportunity to gain valuable employment experience and a Certificate in Professional Practice.

Access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need support to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
