Aims

The strategic aim of this module is to provide the opportunity for the student, in a supportive and controlled environment, to bring together their existing and new found engineering knowledge and skills via the use of a team/group design project. Using a ‘real-life’ external derived project the student will gain valuable experience in the identification, design and management of a problem solution whilst working within a commercial environment. The student via this module will gain confidence in the operational requirements as a practicing professional engineer and thereby enhancing the student’s employability now and within their future career.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Make extended use of critical appraisal in project planning and control procedures relating to a live project using typical software tools designed for this purpose while critically analysing, reflecting on and applying planning mechanisms to a group project.
2 Work constructively and using reflective practice to optimise personal performance as a member of a team engaged in the competitive common aim solution of an engineering design problem.
3 Summatively apply knowledge, understanding and experience previously gained in the students’ programme of study to a realistic engineering design problem in a competitive context and a fixed timeframe.

Indicative content

Project management:
Methods of achieving specified performance within the agreed time scale and budget; organisation of project task forces; use of software tools for planning; scheduling and project control.

Design, employing synthesis, analysis and evaluation techniques:
Students will be encouraged to undertake a methodological approach to design, employing synthesis, analysis and evaluation techniques. In particular the students will be made aware of the integrating aspects of the design process. For example, designing from a resources aspect, i.e. providing finance production/assembly facilities. Of particular importance will be integrating the engineering principles of say mechanics/dynamics with the choice of materials for the compatibility of manufacturing, cost availability and environmental considerations. Problems of group-management and teamwork will be identified and resolved so that the group develops into a cohesive problem-solving unit. Where appropriate/possible the supervisor will emphasise the wider role of the professional engineer in relation to society and the relevant legal and ethical responsibilities. Advice will also be given on costing the design solution and in techniques of justification.

Teaching and learning activity

• An introductory programme on the design process, team roles, team building, creativity and the management of projects.
• Weekly meetings, seminars and discussions both within the group and with the supervising lecturer, who will offer guidance and advice to ensure the group moves effectively towards a reasonable and structured solution to the problem set.
• Each student will keep a personal log. Formal meetings will be convened every week, with a complete record of minutes being kept.
• Each group will produce a full written report on the design project and will give a formal audio-visual presentation of their findings. This will take place during the end of session assessment week.

Assessment

Group Project - 50%
LO - 1-4.
Pass mark - 40%
1000 words per student.
Typically to include a Group Project Report, including a Group Presentation and Poster.

Logbook - 50%
LO - 1-4.
Pass mark - 40%
2000 words.
Typically to include an Individual Logbook containing a critical reflection of practice and that of the team.

Tutorial meetings guiding the process of delivery against the project brief every week from week 8.
