Pre and co requisites

IT literate with basic understanding of data manipulation.


This course aims to prepare students to work in the area of Information analysis by introducing them to the relevant technologies and equip them with skills in the design and development of analytical business information system using up-to-date software development tools.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Explain, discuss and model different types of data required by business functions.
2 Explain and discuss the requirements of quality business information.
3 Design, implement and evaluate an Analytic Business Information System.

Indicative content

This course will cover a range of subject areas, including but not limited to:
• The processes involved in eliciting information from data
• Different types of data models, and database design
• Querying and Manipulating Data Using SQL
• Designing and developing Data Warehouses
• Analyzing data using Pivot tables
• Building Visualization to identifying trends from transactional data
• Turning data into actionable information
• Key attributes of data quality
• Building a prototype of analytic business information system

Teaching and learning activity

Concepts will be introduced during lecture sessions and will be supported by individual work involving problem solving exercises, case studies and discussions. Supervised lab sessions will be used to gain experience in developing an appropriate quality information system.
The course will deal with ethical and social issues concerning the security and confidentiality of data and information; the risks involved in the storage and distribution of information; the need for appropriate management and control of personal data.
The course will develop skills in the development of documentation, the presentation and interpretation of information, and the communication of information orally and visually.

Technical artefact and report to document the design, implementation and evaluation of an Analytic Business Information System.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Students will be given 3 weekly practical tasks with a requirement to upload a report each week as evidence. Feedback will be provided. The students can them rewrite their work and submit it for summative assessment.
