Aims

● to deliver a broad range of fundamental concepts in elementary physical chemistry
● to reinforce basic mathematical principles and skills by applying them to solving physical chemistry calculations

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Manipulate logarithmic equations, units for physical quantities and graphically interpret simple experimental data sets
2. Describe the key types of intermolecular force and their influence on physical phenomena such as solubility, phase changes and the gas laws
3. Relate the laws of thermodynamics to equilibrium constants, Galvanic cell potentials and the spontaneity of chemical reactions
4. Use rate equations and graphical data analysis to determine the kinetic order of a reaction
