To prepare final year undergraduates for entry into graduate employment by requiring them to become familiar with and to reflect upon key characteristics of professional and managerial level employment concepts and practices.

Learning outcomes

On completing this course successfully students will be able to:

1 Reflect critically on their own cognitive style and personality type in preparation for effective job applications and exposure to psychometric/personality testing (tested through either MBTI or Johari Window assignment, and through PDP).

2 Demonstrate an appreciation of the graduate characteristics required by industry (tested through reflective writing in PDP and MBTI/Johari Window assignments.

3 Evaluate, through the production of a Personal Development Profile, their own skills, competencies, and personal characteristics (Tested through PDP).

Indicative content

Issues of management; planning, organising, staffing, directing, controlling as components of management; essentials of project management; understanding personal strengths and weaknesses – reflective portfolios, reflective practice strategies, cognitive styles; Johari Window and Myers Briggs Personality Type Index; understanding selection techniques; psychometric testing; understanding job and person specifications, researching firms and organisations; effective CVs, applications, interviews; enhancing individual professionalism in a corporate setting – verbal and non-verbal communication.

Teaching and learning activity

The course consists of lectures and seminars delivered by a combination of speakers drawn from the University Employability and Careers Service, as well as invited speakers from industry and academic staff members from within Science. The timetabled sessions will consist of a combination of lecture, discussion and workshop activity, including preparation for interviews, that will help students to complete a range of formative learning tasks suitable for standard full time students with limited work experience, FT students with more complete and on-going part-time work experience, as well as part-time students already employed in their chosen industrial/institutional sector. Students with extensive professional experience or working in industry part-time may consider accreditation of experiential learning as an alternative to taking Chem 1082. Moreover, students that are able to complete a suitable summer placement between level 5/6 may replace Chem 1082 with Chem 1144 Science Summer Placement Course.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Engagement with job and personal specifications, provided on the Moodle course, for live jobs related to the students’ subject areas; production of a customised CV with the aim of undergoing a practice interview; engagement in assessment centre tasks as part of a practice assessment centre learning activity; completion of PDP self-reflection tasks prior to submission of PDP assignment for overall assessment.
