To provide an opportunity for personal development in applying prior theoretical and practical learning to a specific project, demonstrating the ability to carry out a sustained piece of work and reflection with respect to attributes of self-management and employability.
The project must be laboratory-based and it should be appropriate for the student’s programme of study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Work independently and apply their knowledge and skills to the solution of a specific practical or theoretical problem.
2. Critically assess research results and the work of others i.e. published material;
3. Use all relevant literature sources to carry out a detailed search into a general topic and specific scientific problem.
4. Prepare a detailed and structured report on the project, with a critical assessment of the work done and the results achieved, and appropriate recommendations from the conclusions drawn;
5. Deliver a clear oral presentation
6. Develop self-management, time management, self-assessment skills

Indicative content

The topic of the project will be the subject of negotiation between the student and the designated supervisor. Support for personal development with respect to self-management, time management and self-assessment skills. Notably this will also include a reflection on a professional employability and/or a networking event.
