Specification

Pre and co requisites

The courses are designed for students who have achieved "A" level competence or CEFR (A2) or equivalent, or who have successfully completed course 2 in the language.

Aims

This course will make appropriate use of textbooks and authentic resources in the target language and will involve the development of the three key areas: the ability to use the target language at independent level for the purpose of communication and comprehension (both concrete and abstract topics); the ability to develop cultural and intercultural awareness and understanding of contemporary social and economic issues in the target country; the ability to demonstrate appropriate use of style and register in different situations. The specific aims of the course are: to enable students to communicate competently, both in writing and orally in a variety of social and professional environments; to enable students to show an understanding of contemporary issues relating to the target country; demonstrate familiarity with the grammar and vocational lexis in the written and spoken language; to help students to demonstrate comprehension of foreign language reports by summarising the target language; to help students to comprehend more complex documents in the target language and to summarise them in English; show an awareness of register through use of language appropriate to a range of formal and informal situations.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will reach the equivalent of the B1 level of the CEFR or the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) level 3.

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 use his/her communicative skills in a professional and vocational context to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options in the target language
2 actively use his/her knowledge of profession-related lexis (on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation) for the production of a clear, detailed text or during extended conversation
3 show an understanding of the structure of the language and critically examine and identify the main ideas of complex text;
4 demonstrate awareness into working life in the target language country, and the socio-economic, legal and political influences which impinge on it
5 actively use accurate grammar in the written and spoken language for the production of clear, detailed conversation with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, or text on a wide range of subjects
6 Character writing practice.

To be indicated to students of Mandarin by the Language Course co-ordinator at the start of the semester.

Teaching and learning activity

To ensure maximum accessibility to the programme students are required to attend a two hour block and one hour conversation class plus language portfolio workshop.
