Pre and co requisites

The course is designed for absolute beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of the language. Alternatively, the student whose competence in the language extends to using a few words or phrases such as common greetings, and the recognition of public notices and signs, would be eligible for the course.


i) To introduce the student to the language and culture of the relevant area; ii) to enable the student to use simple and complex forms of the language in a variety of communicative contexts; iii) to resolve difficulties in understanding structure of the language, and help the student to apply grammatical understanding to develop more elaborate use of the language; iv) to foster the confidence and enthusiasm to engage in further language learning; v) to help students to develop strategies for self-assessment and encourage autonomy in language learning.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will reach the equivalent of the A2 level of the CEFR or the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) level 1.

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 begin to use a range of language functions to communicate orally and in writing in a variety of everyday situations and a limited range of vocational contexts
2 begin to develop comprehension of foreign language texts by communicating gist and detail in English, and on a simpler level, in the target language
3 begin to recognise, prepare and understand everyday private and basic business correspondence
4 begin to summarise in English written and oral material presented in a foreign language and vice versa
5 begin to demonstrate an awareness of the cultural and socio-professional environment of the target language
6 Basic character writing practice

To be indicated to students of Mandarin by the Language Course co-ordinator at the start of the semester.

Teaching and learning activity

To ensure maximum accessibility to the programme students are required to attend a two hour block and one hour conversation class plus language portfolio workshop.
