Aims

This course is about meaning making through the creative use of technology. Students will be introduced to a range of aesthetic practices and technologies, developing their abilities to critically apply creative technologies to effectively communicate a desired intention. Students will also develop skills in group working and collaborative practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Capably apply creative technologies in order to realise creative intentions.
2 Reflect critically upon the creative application of techniques and technologies.
3 Produce collaborative outcomes.
4 Have experience of expressing themselves through a range of different media types.

Indicative content

This course is about the creative application of technologies, empowering students to utilise the fundamental mechanics of practical aesthetics in an informed way.
It is divided into sections which each explore different aesthetic areas and their associated creative tools and technologies. Students will explore Still Image, Sound, Moving Image and Typography.
Each section focuses upon a distinct skills area that can be applied within the development of practical outputs. Students will work collaboratively through a range of creative technologies and will demonstrate their knowledge through an ability to critically reflect upon the results.
Students will work in groups and will demonstrate their learning through critical reflections.

Teaching and learning activity

Through a series of lectures, studio and lab sessions, students will develop and apply practical skills to build up competency in a range of craft areas.

Methods of SUMMATIVE Assessment: 3 minute video reflection.

Grading Mode: Numeric
Weighting: 40%
Pass Mark: 40%
Outline Details: Reflect critically upon the mood outputs made by a different group. Analyse and comment on the aesthetic techniques employed in their construction.

Outline Details: Reflect critically upon the development of your advert film. Discuss your intentions and how you set out to realise them, making reference to what you learned from the term one comments.

Students are not required to pass all elements of summative assessment in order to pass the course.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Develop a portfolio of outputs which should aim to express two distinct moods. Each mood should aim to be evoked by:
Photography;
Sound.

Develop a short product advertisement film applying a range of creative techniques developed on this course. The advert should include:
Moving Image;
Sound;
Typography.
