Aims

• Further develop students' understanding of the development and progression in teaching mathematics.
• Deepen students’ understanding on the issues involved in the teaching of mathematics and identify how to manage them; equip students to cater for a broad range of learning needs, including a mastery approach.
• Support students’ to understand and address children’s misconceptions and gaps in subject knowledge.
• Further develop students’ ability to monitor and develop their own subject knowledge and pedagogy, and address any misconceptions and gaps in subject knowledge.
• Support students to undertake a mathematical investigation at their own level and plan and deliver an investigation whilst on School Experience 2.
• Support students to plan and deliver a cross-curricular lesson whilst on School Experience 2 and present to peers.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Understand the development and progression in children’s mathematics.

2 Understand how to manage issues arising in mathematics caused by special educational needs and development, drawing on current initiatives and relevant strategies, and develop a mastery approach to teaching. (TS1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8)
3 Be aware of how to identify and address mathematical misconceptions and gaps in subject knowledge which children might have. (TS2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8)
4 Reflect upon their own subject knowledge and set appropriate and relevant targets for their further development. (TS8,PT2)

5 Plan and deliver an investigative activity that will promote fluency, reasoning and problem solving. (TS1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

6 Plan and deliver a cross-curricular lesson that will motivate and engage learners. (TS1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
