Aims

This course aims to develop students’ subject knowledge, understanding and skills in an aspect of primary professional practice in order that they will be able to offer this field as an area of enhanced study in their teaching career. In particular, the focus will be on appropriate pedagogy that will support progression in children’s learning and the development of leadership skills.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1. Extend their conceptual and systematic understanding in the selected field of study (personal and pedagogical knowledge). (TS2, 3, 4, 7)
2. Critically evaluate how children learn and develop in the selected field of study. (TS3, 5)
3. Critically reflect on recent research relating to effective teaching and learning in the selected field of study. (TS1, 2, 3, 4)
4. Apply their knowledge to secure children’s progression in the selected field of study and make accurate and productive use of assessment. (TS2, 4, 5, 6)
5. Develop their understanding of subject leadership skills. (TS3, 4, 8)


Indicative content

This course will focus on providing BA Primary students with the opportunity to further develop an area of interest or expertise in an area of primary professional Practice (e.g. Maths, PE, SEND, Early Years). Through the course of study, students will develop their subject knowledge in the selected field and their understanding of effective pedagogy. Teaching will be provided by subject specialist tutors and on-line resources to support aspects of personal subject knowledge enhancement will also be available. The taught input will be augmented by school based training days focused on learning and teaching in the selected area. During school based training students will be required to undertake tasks focused on:
• Developing a strong knowledge of an appropriate range of teaching approaches
suitable for the field of study.
• Progression in children's learning within the field of study.
• Leadership in the field of study.
