Aims

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the nature of teaching and learning in the classroom and appreciate children as individual learners, with a focus on the appropriate curriculum, pedagogy and classroom practice for KS1 and KS2. Students will be introduced to continuity and phases of progression for children as learners. It will aim to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of the cyclic process of planning and assessment. The course aims to make links between subjects as well as introduce subject specific pedagogy.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Begin to use their developing subject knowledge across the curriculum to understand the phases of progression for children as learners. (TS2, 3)
2 Understand the nature and pedagogy of effective teaching and learning in the Core and Foundation subjects. (TS 3, 4, 5, 6)
3 Demonstrate their understanding of the nature and importance of the assessment-planning cycle in children’s learning and development. (TS1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8)
4 Understand the requirements of the National Curriculum and how these relate to classroom practice. (TS3)
5 Begin to recognise the cross curricular nature of learning through the use of picture books. (TS1, 2, 3,)

Indicative content

Students will begin to explore, both at their own level, and in terms of children’s learning, the process by which children develop their skills, knowledge and understanding across the curriculum and the pedagogy which will support this development. The opportunity to explore a range of resources and to experience a variety of organisational learning strategies will form an integral part of the course. This course will build on students’ knowledge and understanding of the EYFS and focus on upper KS1 and Lower KS2.
