Aims

This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the nature of teaching and learning in the classroom and appreciate children as individual learners, with a focus on the appropriate curriculum, pedagogy and classroom practice for children in upper KS2 and transition into KS3. It will aim to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of observation as the basis of planning provision for learning in these key stages as well as the need for appropriate and effective pedagogy.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Be introduced to the factors that influence children’s learning and attainment. (TS 1, 2, 5)
2 Have an awareness of the nature and requirements of the Statutory and non-statutory elements of the National Curriculum. (NC) in KS2 & KS3. (TS 3)
3 Understand the nature of effective teaching and learning in the primary school, including the importance of planning, the learning environment and the role of the teaching assistant. (TS 1,4, 8)

Demonstrate understanding of the nature and importance of observation in assessing children’s learning and development. (TS 5, 6)

Begin to use their developing subject knowledge across the curriculum to understand a child’s learning and development. (TS 3)

Begin to reflect on the interplay of pedagogy and classroom practice in promoting children’s learning and well-being in the primary school. (TS 3, 8, PT2)

Indicative content

This course will focus on providing students in their first year of study with opportunities to develop their understanding of ways in which schools provide an appropriate curriculum for children in their primary school.

• Continuity and phases of progression for children as learners, with subject specific pedagogy at Upper KS2.
• Effective use of assessment to support pupil progress and achievement.
• Students will develop their understanding of transition issues and some of characteristics of teaching and learning in Year 7 (KS3).
