Pre and co requisites



The course aims to:
• Introduce students to the relevant statutory curricula;
• enable students to develop the subject knowledge required to underpin effective teaching in English, mathematics and science across the relevant key stages;
• develop their wider subject knowledge in response to government initiatives or curricular change;
• enable students to document and collate portfolios of their subject knowledge in English, mathematics and science; and
• support students in their understanding of the process for demonstrating evidence for the Teachers’ Standards.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 become familiar with the requirements of the NC and the EYFS (TS 3);
2 demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of teaching English, mathematics and science with confidence and enthusiasm, and promoting positive attitudes (TS 1, 2, 3);
3 demonstrate the curricular and content knowledge required for Qualified Teacher Status in relation to English, mathematics and science (TS 3);
4 assess their own subject knowledge and begin to identify their own learning needs in response to feedback and advice from tutors (TS3, 8); and
5 reflect on their knowledge and understanding of effective teaching and learning in the core curricular subjects (TS2, 3, 4 and 6).

Indicative content

The course content will remain flexible in order to respond to government initiatives, curricular change and feedback from partnership schools. Likely content includes an introduction to:
• systematic synthetic phonics;
• grammar, punctuation and spelling in the curriculum;
• children’s literature and literary features;
• mastery teaching and the bar method;
• evolution and inheritance; and
• teaching with tablet devices.
