Aims

To further develop the students’ understanding of construction technology from level four with an emphasis on the technology and servicing of medium-rise and larger span construction.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Communicate an awareness of the various functional and performance requirements of medium-rise and larger span commercial and industrial buildings;
2 demonstrate an understanding of the technical options commonly adopted for constructing, enclosing and servicing larger commercial and industrial buildings;
3 begin to analyse the options and taking a performance-based approach, propose appropriate technical solutions for constructing, enclosing and servicing larger commercial and industrial buildings;
4 begin to recognise the environmental impact of constructing and operating commercial and industrial buildings and measures to mitigate their embodied and operational carbon emissions;
5 begin to understand the key legislation and guidance seeking to minimise the impact of the construction industry on the environment.

Indicative content

Site investigation; foundation types; basement construction; concrete and steel framed structures; the external enclosure; off-site manufacture; waste elimination and management; space configuration; fire protection; heating, cooling and ventilation systems; electricity supply and distribution; combined heat and power (CHP); daylighting and electric lighting; vertical transportation systems; environmental assessment of buildings; passive design.
