This module will provide an overview of management as a function and a process in modern health and social care organisations. Students will explore the development of knowledge and theories about management, and how these have been applied in practice in health and social care organisations. This will include an exploration of recent UK and International trends in theory and practice. The ability of health and social care students to apply or synthesise management tools to pressing management issues will be a key emphasis of this module.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Critically discuss the development of management knowledge and theory, and the role of
managers in modern health and social care organisations.
2 Demonstrate knowledge of and critically analyse the functions and practice of management in health and social care organisations
3 Critically analyse recent global trends in management theory and ideology, and their application to the practice of management in health and social care organisations
4 Apply management and entrepreneurial models to health and social care organisations by demonstrating the skills and competence required to run or start-up a health and social care organisations or enterprise

Method of Summative Assessment: Management Report and Reflective Essay.

Grading Mode: Numeric.
Weighting: 100.
Pass Mark: 40.
Word Length: 2500 words.
Outline Details: Part One: Write a 500-word entrepreneurial management report summary proffering solutions to the challenges faced in a health and social care organisation. Part Two: Using a reflective framework (2000) critically analyse your management approach to managing a health and social care organisation by reflecting on your previous experiences. Analyse your experience through the critical functions acknowledging relevant theories of management that can be applied to enhance your management capacity.
NB: These pieces of work must be submitted as one document.
