Aims

• To provide students with the analytical tools needed for the evaluation and comprehension of the viability of an entrepreneurial idea.
• To help students Identify the critical success factors pertinent to their opportunity as well the capabilities necessary to flesh out an entrepreneurial team
• To help students conduct primary and secondary research to shape their entrepreneurial opportunity and assess the viability of their venture.
• To provide participants with the opportunity to critically present their business idea in front of committee.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Identify, assess and develop informed understanding of the overall target markets
2 Assess industry attractiveness and the likelihood that the venture can achieve sustainable competitive advantage
3 Craft a viable business model that can achieve sustainable competitive advantage
4 Identify critical success factors that an entrepreneurial team must possess to pursue the opportunity
5 Assess a proposed team’s ability to meet the entrepreneurial purpose.

Indicative content

On completing this course successfully students will be able to develop a customer-driven feasibility study for a proposed new venture, either a start-up or a new venture within an established firm. This feasibility study will (based on primary and secondary data to be collected prior to and during the programme) assess and shape the opportunity.

Teaching and learning activity

A programme of lectures and tutorials will be centred around case study material and supported by a main text book and on-line material.

• Online independent study
• Hands-on project planning, execution and reflection sessions.
• Guidance and feedback from tutors.
• Interactive discussion through ICTs (i.e. email and Skype) with tutors.
• Real time discussion forums through Moodle and other sites.
• Library and on‐line resources research.
• Self-managed reading of texts, professional journals, videos and case studies.
• Individual Panopto presentation.
• Written project report.

Assessment

15 Minute Individual Panopto Presentation - 20% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning outcome 1.

Individual Business Report - 80% weighting, 40% pass mark.
Learning outcomes 1 - 5.
4,000 words.

Students are not required to pass all elements of summative assessment in order to pass the course.

Formative Assessment - Students are expected to produce a 2 page slides talking about business proposal and the plan for data as well as its collection method.
