The objectives of this module are three-fold. First, it aims to help students establish a fundamental understanding of the complex nature of decision making in the organisational context with an evidence-based approach to exploring behavioural, organisational, and social factors. Second, this module aims to provide students with a practical opportunity to develop their decision-making skills in both personal and professional context through an enquiry-based approach to solving organisational challenges. Third, this module is intended for encouraging students to cultivate ethical organisational citizenship in the workplace through examining the negative individual and organisational consequences.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Describe and explain the key models of decision making;
2. Identify, evaluate, and interpret the information required for specific managerial decisions in an analytical manner;
3. Diagnose judgemental errors and biases as well as the immediate environment that affect individual and group decision making;
4. Apply relevant theoretical perspectives to evaluate individual and managerial decision-making processes and relevant consequences;
5. Professionally communicate individual and group decisions in difficult workplace situations.

Indicative content

This module will draw on the literature on decision making in the field of organisational behaviour, workplace sociology, economic behaviour, social psychology, and human resource management. The content of this module comprises four key themes. First, the module will introduce the classic dichotomy of decision making and the influence of cognitive bias and mental mistakes. Second, it will explore the dynamics of group decision-making. Third, it will examine issues related to uncertainty, technology, and ethics in contemporary organisational settings. Fourth, it will discuss the approaches to improving managerial decision making.

Teaching and learning activity

This module will adopt an enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning organisational decision making with interactive activities that require students to proactively take part in.
Lecture: One-hour per week.
Tutorial: One-hour per week.


Management Report: 100% weighting, 40% pass mark.

Word Length: 3000 words.

Formative Assessment: This module will include an individual learning journal as a formative assessment to help student establish a foundation for the summative assessment. The learning journal will facilitate tutorial discussions and offer students an opportunity to obtain weekly feedback from peers and tutors.
