The aim of this module is to provide all year-one engineering students with understanding through practice of the need for a high level of professional and ethical engineering conduct that is mindful of commercial, economic and social context.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Apply fundamental knowledge of project management techniques and the tools that are used to achieve engineering objectives as well as demonstrate appropriate written and oral communication, presentation and reasoning skills.
2 Develop effective team working skills, gain self-knowledge and establish a foundation for continuous professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning.
3 Understand the basics of the engineering design process and engineering projects, have a broad awareness of engineering disciplines, technical literature, risk assessments and effective primary and secondary research.

Indicative content

Communication: communication styles, formal and informal oral communication with key stakeholders, written communication including emails, academic report writing, note-taking, keeping a log book, Verbal communication skills in groups and formal presentations. Reasoning, critical analysis and evaluation and discussion skills.
Self-knowledge and professional development: Standard psychometric testing methods (Belbin, Johari Window, MBTI, Management Style, Leadership Style, Learning Style), group work and team work, leadership and management, CV, cover letter, interview skills, LinkedIn profile, motivation, CPD planning, professional registration.
Project management: project management theory, project management analysis tools (PESTLE, SWOT, Porter’s model), project planning (Gantt chart, MS Project, milestones, resources, costings and budget), decision making models, systems thinking, critical path analysis.
Engineering professional practice: EWB Engineering for People Design Challenge, project based learning, enquiry based learning, practical engineering skills, creative thinking, problem solving, critical thinking, group work, feasibility and validation.
Research and legal skills: Health & Safety, Risk Assessment, ISO and BS standard awareness, codes of practice, quality, referencing, plagiarism, technical literature review, date gathering & review - secondary research, factual reasoning, scientific method.

Teaching and learning activity

Teaching and learning activities will be based on both applied and research based enquiry. The teaching activities will include lectures, guest speakers, seminars and tutorials sessions.

The module contact time will comprise of:
- 24 lectures split into 5 major topics: communication, self-knowledge and professional development, project management, research and legal skills, engineering professional practice.
- 19 tutorials that will comprise of guest lectures, practical sessions and seminars allowing the students to examine and apply the lecture concepts in depth focusing on project and enquiry based learning.

The module activities will follow the guidelines of the Engineering Council UK (the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes - AHEP and the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence - UKSPEC) and the rules of the Engineers Without Borders Engineering for People Design Challenge.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Student learning will be supported through dedicated application sessions, peer’s and Module tutor’s feedback group critical thinking and reflective practice. Students will be offered dedicated career clinics and one-to-one meetings with professionals and opportunities to hear guest speakers.
