Aims

• To expose students to a range of environmental and ecological situations;
• To extend the students’ skills in observation, measurement, data presentation and interpretation from laboratory and classroom to the field;
• To develop fieldwork organisational and self-management skills;
• To develop a range of competencies including general transferable skills and technical skills in the laboratory and field;
• To introduce students to more practical techniques appropriate to associated theory courses;
• To assist the development of the understanding of associated theory courses.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Develop an awareness of different field environments and their associated ecology and infrastructure
2 Develop an ability to transfer classroom-based knowledge and apply it in field situations
3 Select and use appropriate techniques to conduct fieldwork in an organised manner
4 Report on the work undertaken in a suitable format, calculating results where appropriate and drawing conclusions

Indicative content

This course will be delivered through a series of one-day field visits throughout Terms 1 and 2, and two residential visits (at the start of Term 1 and at the end of Term 2). Practical work will be associated with the appropriate theory courses taken at Level 4. Basic field skills relevant to geography and environmental science will be developed: the use and interpretation of maps; the relationship between geology, landform and vegetation; aspects of weather and climate; practical classification and identification of flora and fauna, and ecological surveying.

Teaching and learning activity

Material will be delivered primarily in the field at a variety of sites in Kent and further afield, and will involve demonstration, field-based lectures and hands-on activities.

Outline Details: Portfolio of mini-reports (300-700 words each) comprising reflections/commentary on each field visit (total of 6), as directed by the teaching team, supported with photographs, maps and tables where necessary. Students will also complete a course handbook for the Lake District Field Trip.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning:
Feedback and discussion on draft field reports and in-field discussions. Completion of a field notebook with comments and feedback.
