Aims

• To introduce students to academic study in the university
• To develop students communication skills within a group situation
• To introduce students to the expectation of working at level 4
• To introduce students to the theory and pedagogy which would characterise active learning
• To introduce students to the potential of the outside learning environment

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1 Understand the requirements of writing at level 4. (TS8)

2 Be familiar with the processes of writing, submitting and engaging with feedback for an assignment. (TS8)

3 Demonstrate a developing understanding of ‘active learning’ in primary education. (TS1,2,3)

4 Demonstrate an understanding of the outside learning environment and why it is important in a child’s learning and development. (TS 4,5)
5 Begin to understand the nature of teaching and learning within the primary curriculum. (TS1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8)

Indicative content

This course will focus on providing BA Primary students with an introduction to the content and nature of the programme. Integral to the course will be an introduction to teaching and learning at the university, school based study and an opportunity to work as part of a group including:
• Activities to introduce students to the content and nature of the course
• Introduction to teaching and learning at the university
• University led experiences of ‘active learning’
