The aim of the module overall is to enhance students’ academic skills by enabling them to identify areas of academic skills relevant to the pursuit of a degree in higher education; identify students’ own academic strengths and weaknesses; facilitate the development of learning and transferable skills; encourage an ethos of lifelong learning; assist students in managing the transition to their second year of study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate writing skills and scientific communication skills appropriate to Level 4.
2. Develop a foundational knowledge of the APA referencing system and literature search.
3. Show academic skills such as critical thinking, creativity and the formation of clear argument.
4. Understand the importance of academic and personal development.

Indicative content

• Literature searches and finding articles in paper and electronic journals
• Scientific communication and writing
• Referencing and citation skills
• Evaluating the quality of literature and understanding the contribution made by different sources of knowledge, distinguishing between media-related articles, primary and secondary research sources of knowledge
• Presentation skills and groupwork

Teaching and learning activity

Module delivery will be based on a combination of lectures and tutorials. Some lectures will provide students with important information that will support learning on the degree in the first year of studies. Additionally, students will have lectures designed to help tackle various issues that may arise during the upcoming student years. Students will also practice referencing skills online via a quiz. The tutorials that are embedded in this module will comply with the University’s Personal Tutors Policy ensuring that pastoral and career development support are also provided.


Coursework: 60% weighting, 40% pass mark.

Outline Details: Unseen short-answer exam covering a range of topics taught over the module. 1 hour.

Formative Assessment:

500-word formative essay. Students will be asked to write a response to feedback.
Quizzes and interactive activities during taught sessions.
