Amare Desta

Senior Lecturer & Professor of Information & Knowledge Management

Amare is an experienced & highly motivated lecturer, researcher & practitioner with keen interest and passion for teaching.

Over the last twenty-five years, he has held appointments at several leading UK academic institutions including at: the London School of Economics (LSE); London South Bank University (LSBU); Goldsmiths, University of London; the Open University in London; University of East London (UEL), Birkbeck, University of London & University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) where he was a Programme Manager for Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). He joined the University of Greenwich (UoG) in February 2023.

He earned his PhD in Information Systems with focus on Knowledge Management and an MSc in Analysis, Design & Management of Information Systems from the London School of Economics (LSE).  He also earned Master of Education (MEd) from the University of Cambridge and a BSc. (Hons) Degree in Computer Science from ARU in Cambridge.

Responsibilities within the university

Amare is a Senior Lecturer at the Executive Business Centre (EBC) and module leader for International Business MBA Project. He teaches in business management & strategy related subjects and actively engaged in researching innovation & creativity and the management of technology / systems in business and contemporary society.  He has particular interest and expertise in research supervision at all levels with keen interest in developing students' research skills.

Awards

Due to his continuous efforts & his various scholarly activities and his commitment to help improve the quality of education and assist the next generation of African scholars, he is awarded a full professorship in relation to Information & Knowledge Management by the leading Ethiopian University (i.e. Jimma University) in December 2016.

Recognition

Amare was chosen as one of the Five Most Outstanding Learners in the East Anglia by the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.

He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award by Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.

Amare is the founder of Global Knowledge Exchange Network (GKEN) which is aimed at helping to imbue the future generation of African Scholars.  As GKEN chair, he coordinated and chaired NINE multidisciplinary knowledge exchange international conferences at London South Bank University (LSBU); Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA) under the themes of:

Amare also Coordinated & Chaired the 1st ever Knowledge Exchange Symposium for UWTSD in 2019.

He supervised and mentored more than 20 PhD/DBA candidates to successful completion

Key funded projects

  • As research project manager and member of Global Health Research group at Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London, assisted to secure £2,000,000 to improve asthma outcomes in 6 African countries
  • As lead coordinator & Chair of GKEN, secured $30,000 from CODESRIA** & carried desk-based research to identify ways to develop a Knowledge Exchange Model that can assist the capacity of universities within Africa. ** CODESRIA is (Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa
