‘Trailblazing’ collaboration with the University of Kent
The University of Greenwich and the University of Kent have recently announced our intention to formally collaborate. Together we have a unique opportunity to create a first-of-its-kind multi-university model that will bring both of our institutions under one structure to create a ‘super-university’, whilst enabling each of us to retain our name, identity and local presence.
The two universities have signed a memorandum of understanding and over the next few months we’ll be doing detailed financial and legal due diligence regarding the collaboration. We expect that to be completed with contracts exchanged by the end of 2025, and a decision on the implementation timescale given shortly after that. If approved, we anticipate the new multi university group - provisionally named London and South East University Group - will be established ready for the 2026/27 academic year.
It is important for students applying to the university for entry in 2026 or 2027 to know that there is no impact on your choice to study here and the application process will continue as normal.
We've collated a Q&A below to answer any questions you may have. However please do contact us on +44 (0)20 8331 9000 or via our contact form if you would like to speak to us.
What’s the rationale for this collaboration and why have you decided to do this now?
The shared vision of the two university's is to deliver education without boundaries from city to coast. Our collective strength will mean we can do much more to transform lives and power inclusive opportunity, with students placed at the heart of everything we do. This is an evolution of our relationship. Our two universities have been working together for more than 20 years and collaborate well. This is an opportunity to do even more together, strengthen our offering and bring greater benefits to support the region’s needs.
I'm going to be applying to the university for entry in 2026 (or 2027). How does this affect me?
There are no planned changes for, or impact on, any prospective undergraduate or postgraduate students applying to study here, whether based in the UK or overseas. New students will apply for their chosen course at the University of Greenwich in the usual way and they will then study at and graduate from the university.
Will the university's current courses and programmes continue as they are?
There are no planned changes to courses or programmes. Our current and incoming students will continue to study the course they are taking/applying to.
Will there be changes to course staff, or to the curriculum or assessments?
We continually review our portfolio and curricula to ensure we are offering the courses that our students want to study and are sought after by employers. Like all universities we will also always be subject to normal workforce changes as people move on or progress, but there are clear processes in place to ensure this will not affect your ability to begin and complete your course.
Will my chosen course be move to a different campus?
No, there are no planned relocations of teaching for all current students or for those applying for entry in 2026 or 2027.
Will this affect my Visa status?
We have strong assurance from the DfE that this will not impact students’ visa status. There are sometimes changes to UKVI rules and we will continue to alert students on visas in the usual way if anything changes.
Will University of Greenwich students have access to facilities at the University of Kent?
Our students already benefit from shared library facilities across the two universities. As part of our discussions with the University of Kent we will discuss further access to facilities and student services across all of our campuses.
How will this affect access to student support services (eg wellbeing, careers advice) ?
Our students will continue to receive access to the excellent student support services from the university in the usual way. Over time, we will enhance the offering through shared resources, but this would follow after a successful completion of this process.
Will this affect bursaries or scholarships?
There will be no impact on the current bursaries or scholarships offered by the university.
Will my degree or qualification be awarded by the University of Greenwich?
Yes, current and future students will be awarded by and graduate from the University of Greenwich.
Where will graduation ceremonies take place?
Graduation ceremonies will continue as they currently are at each institution. University of Greenwich students have their graduation ceremonies at Greenwich Chapel and at Rochester Cathedral. University of Kent students graduate at Canterbury and Rochester Cathedrals.
Will there be any changes to the Greenwich Students’ Union?
The Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU) is an independent organisation, so this will be for them to determine. This is a new institutional model for the students’ unions too, and they will have their own process to undertake on how best to support the students at the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent.
What will happen to the student societies?
There are no changes at this time. Student societies are independent of the universities, so this would be for them to determine.
Will this affect the number of students?
We anticipate that this new collaboration will be an attractive offer to new students and, with the growth and opportunities it offers, enable us to increase the size of our student body.
Will this affect alumni?
No, anyone who has been awarded a qualification from the University of Greenwich in the past will continue to retain that qualification from the university.
