Ashly Samuel: Robert Holman Bursary recipient

TLDRoffon

“Thanks to the bursary my overall confidence and peace-of-mind dramatically improved. I'm now applying for graduate schemes in my field of study and feel hopeful for the future.”

Supporting South London students

The Robert Holman Memorial Trust was established by the family of Robert Holman in his memory in 2005 and supports a new generation of south Londoners, making their way in the field of Finance.

A bursary of £1,000 is available for one second-year and one third-year undergraduate student from Greenwich, Lewisham, or Southwark and studying an Accounting and Finance course.

Memories of Greenwich

Ashly Samuel was inspired to study Accounting and Finance at Greenwich following an Open Day. “Before exploring the campus, I was nervous, but everyone working on site that day went above and beyond to ensure I was at ease and kept me well-informed throughout the tour. The campus itself is beautiful and I loved the array of shops that surround the university.

“I was excited to begin the programme and I remember the lecturers who were really passionate about their subject. You could see they loved teaching and just put effort into making sure everyone understood what they were teaching. It makes such a difference to our student experience when teachers are passionate about their subject.”

Receiving the Bursary

Ashly was in the final year of her programme when she applied for the Robert Holman Bursary, where travel was one of her biggest costs as a student. This meant she didn’t have enough income left over to buy books or stationery, “things I actually needed for my programme”. The Bursary therefore came at the right time, and the financial support enabled her to concentrate on her studies and provided additional peace of mind.

Receiving the Bursary also gave Ashly renewed confidence as she completed her final year. Having graduated earlier in 2022, she is now feeling hopeful as she seeks to launch her graduate career in accounting and finance.

Scholarships at Greenwich

Choosing to go to university can be a daunting decision. And we know that it is difficult to make important life decisions when you feel restricted by financial worries – a scholarship can make this decision easier and change the course of a student’s life.

Students must consider how they will pay for their accommodation and living costs. They may also be the first in their family to go to university and not feel confident that they are making the right choice.

Through one of our established scholarships or numerous prizes and awards, Greenwich is able to provide our students with peace of mind. This type of gift can be transformational and nurture future talent.

When bright, capable people miss out on university and other life-changing opportunities, there is a much higher cost to society – which is why we need your help. Your donation helps outstanding students access education and recognises their achievements along the way regardless of financial constraints.

The Robert Holman Bursary is one of a number of scholarships and bursaries established to support Greenwich students to succeed.

Thank you to all our alumni and friends who support Greenwich by giving to a Scholarship or one of our other Funds.
