Why Greenwich?
I chose Greenwich University initially for the Business School and the connections I would be able to make however my decision was solidified when I came to the offer holder open day and met the Generator team, they gave a talk about the Enterprise Challenge and I immediately knew this was where I would study. Having the opportunity to build my business ideas and have it in front of professionals to make it a reality held a huge appeal.
A typical day...
Typically, my student life is quite quiet, I am a mature student, so I normally attend my lectures and spend time with classmates, I do wish there was a little more to become involved in as an older student.
The social environment...
The social environment seems open to me, however, many of my classmates are younger than me so different things appeal to all of us.
Extracurricular activities and the university experience...
I mainly take part in generator activities; their hacks are really enjoyable and allow me to put into practice what I am learning in class and explore different industries. I have had the opportunity to meet many people and particularly small business owners, having the chance to network and gain advice from these people is invaluable and have pushed me to develop my own skills further.
Most rewarding experience?
My most rewarding experience so far was taking part in the Enterprise Challenge this year, my business idea ‘Buddy App’ was something that was just notes on paper until I spoke to someone at the generator who encouraged me to apply. From then on, my idea manifested itself into something amazing that seemed to inspire the people around me who was supporting me, in particular my mentor Ghislaine, she believed in my idea and me from the beginning. Winning the Social Enterprise category was something that I never thought would happen, I was just excited to have made it to the final, but, when they announced my name, I was stunned and proud. My tiny idea was now something that had gained a small piece of recognition on a big stage and to me that was amazing.
Since then, I have been building the business steadily and hope to have a launch date within the next year.
Future plans?
I aspire to be a business owner, I started university with this goal in mind and it hasn’t changed. If anything, I am more determined to build my own business and my education is only making that easier as I now have the skill and knowledge on the best ways to run a business, I am more determined to be successful.
What would you do differently and what advice would you give to new students?
I would read more in my first year and explore more mentoring opportunities rather than letting myself ease into education again.
Take all the chances, meet all the people and ask all the questions. Remember you are a student and your job is to learn, there are so many opportunities to take chances and explore every angle of your degree, you don’t have to commit to the career choices that you made at application, find something you love and WANT to do!
