How studying International Business in Greenwich helped Maddy land a career she actually cares about

Maddy’s International Business journey at Greenwich

Growing up in the US, Maddy always knew she wanted to explore more of the world. Studying International Business - BA (Hons) International Business with Language - was her way in.

“I’ve always been really interested in how business works on a global level, like how cultures and groups of people approach business functions differently,” she says. “I knew I needed to get outside of that bubble and experience the world first-hand”.

Greenwich stood out immediately. Between its location, international community and the vibe of the Business School itself, she saw a place where she could learn from people as much as from books.

“It felt like somewhere I’d meet people from all over and really see business from different perspectives”.

Learning from experience

For Maddy, the most valuable part of the course wasn’t just the content - it was how it was delivered.

“Our professors brought so many different industry experiences into the classroom. It wasn’t just theories. They’d share stories from their own careers, which made everything feel way more relevant”.

She also found that being around students from all over the world shaped the way she thought.

“You learn how to communicate better, how to understand different ways of thinking. That’s a big part of international business”.

The Disney moment

One of the highlights of Maddy’s journey was her placement year at Disney, working in the Corporate Communications team.

“Disney was really a dream come true for me. I had been applying to placements regularly and it was the last one I thought I’d get chosen for”.

The experience gave her an inside look at how a global brand operates.

“It was intense, but I learned so much about branding, campaign planning, and working in a fast-paced, creative environment. It helped me build strong connections and figure out what kind of career I want”.

Getting stuck in

Outside of lectures, Maddy fully threw herself into university life.

“In my first year, I joined the International Students Society, and later became President in my second year. That gave me a space to be around people who understood what it’s like being far from home”.

She also became a Student Rep for her course, a Student Ambassador for two years, and worked as a Residential Assistant throughout her time in halls.

“All of these experiences pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped shape who I’ve become”.

What’s next?

After four years at Greenwich, Maddy is about to start her dream job in the UK sports industry, working in PR and Communications.

“It’s been an amazing journey. I came here never having been abroad before, not knowing anyone. Now I’ve got friends from around the world, experiences I’m proud of, and a better sense of who I am”

“Greenwich gave me a sturdy foundation to start my career. Now I’m ready to build on it”.
