Dr Panagiotis Pentaris is an Associate Professor of Social Work and Thanatology in the School of Human Sciences at the University of Greenwich, where he is also a member of the Institute for Lifecourse Development, an internationally recognised institute focusing on interdisciplinary research across the lifespan.
Exploring both the intrapersonal (moral) and interpersonal (ethical) nature of death and dying in the context of their development (philosophical), Dying in a Transhumanist and Posthuman Society shows how death and dying have been and will continue to be governed in any given society.
We asked Dr Pentaris to tell us more about the upcoming book. “This book is the result of a two-year period of investigations, conversations, interviews, debates and much reading on a topic that I did not think I would be writing about.” Panagiotis told us. “My interest was on focusing on the future of the governance of dying and the impact this has socially, ethically and morally.” He went on to explain; “Yet, it became clear very quickly that one cannot consider the future of death, dying and bereavement (and life for that matter) without exploring the future first. Transhumanists and futurists have largely debated the rapid technological advancements while medicine is progressing exceptionally quickly, too. This book considers that context and explores how death and dying are viewed in it.”
