A totally flexible course

After working in teaching and then having her daughter, Sarah Qazi decided it was time to approach a new path. She discovered the Food Safety and Quality Management, PGCert/PGDip/MSc degree at the University of Greenwich and knew it was the right choice for her due to it being a part-time and distance-learning course she could study around her family in a subject she was keen to learn more about.

Sarah’s course is asynchronous, meaning it is ‘on demand’, with pre-recorded lectures and tutorials, although staff are very happy to schedule tutorials or meet with students when needed. Students are therefore able to complete the course whilst working full or part time or negotiating other commitments.

The course is run by Natural Resources Institute at the University of Greenwich, a specialist research, development and education organisation focusing on food, agriculture, environment and sustainable livelihoods, which has run for over 125 years and contributes to huge projects globally.

Challenge yourself with broad modules

My Master's degree has helped me develop many skills academically, personally and professionally. The assignments have challenged me to improve over the years.

Sarah explains that food safety is crucial in protecting public health and the food we consume, and her course has allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of these topics. The course covers research skills as well as learning skills, and modules explore the importance of food safety in a global context, including how to prevent food contamination; how the global food market is controlled by legislation to protect consumer health; the importance of using preventative systems in food supply and more.

In the last year of the three-year course, students demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills they have acquired during the taught course. The project is usually work-based related and applied to a student’s individual areas of interest.

Advance your goals

Sarah is now in her final year at the university and is proud to be graduating from her Master’s degree at the University of Greenwich.

The support I have received from all of my course leaders and supervisors has been a great contribution towards my degree and I am very grateful for having studied here.

Her next goals are to go into research and complete a PhD while gaining experience in industry.
