“I had my own imaginary lab at home where I used to mix different things I could find. I believed I was going to discover something new!”
At just fourteen years old, she undertook a short internship at a nursing home. This experience inspired her and set her on the path to where she is today – in her third year of studying Biomedical Science.
She describes Biomedical Science as “the study of many health science disciplines including genetics, microbiology, haematology, biochemistry and immunology.”
For her, the decision to study Biomedical Science was always to further her goal of understanding human disease.
“Cancer Biology has always captivated me.”
Carolina knew the University of Greenwich was the place for her when she discovered Cancer Biology and Therapeutics was taught in the third year as an optional module, led by Professor Lauren Pecorino. The location of the University was another factor. “I was born in a big city and having the opportunity to travel to London on the university bus was really inviting.”
Always supported
Carolina feels the support she has been given from the University has made her student experience truly special. From her lecturers, who have “awakened in me the interest to teach others about this passionate world that science is” to various student activities on offer, support was never far away.
“Studying during these past two years in a pandemic hasn’t been easy, but I always felt supported by the staff and all the student activities organised by both Greenwich and Medway Student Unions.”
The Student Hub in Medway is the Students’ Union available for all students at Greenwich, Kent and Canterbury studying at Medway.
No more imaginary
At Greenwich, Carolina has left behind the imaginary lab for the cutting-edge laboratories at the University of Greenwich’s Medway Campus. She is turning what was once a childhood daydream into a reality.
“My main goal right now is to become a PhD student.”
She is hopeful that one day she may be leading her own research team. “Who knows?”
