Computer Science is an ever-evolving field

After graduating from his university in Nepal, Akshya worked as a Technical Engineer with a not-for-profit organisation in Kathmandu, then later became a software project manager for a company. Wanting to push himself further, he decided to leave his role to study a Master’s degree in the UK.

He says it was his inclination towards everything logic-oriented, coupled with his desire to meet the demands of his industry for graduates with advanced skills and knowledge, that led him to this decision.

Computer science is an ever-evolving and emerging field. I felt ready to meet the demanding standards of this industry – therefore, I decided to pursue a graduate programme in computer science.

He applied and was accepted to the Computer Science, MSc at the University of Greenwich. He explains it was the inspiring reputation of the university that captured his interest and the course allowed students a choice of two exciting pathways to specialise in: Data Science or Network Engineering.

A smooth transition from work to study

Akshya says the culture at the university and its support for students has meant himself and many other international students can feel comfortable in their learning environments and thrive.

One of his favourite experiences has been working as a Student Ambassador, where he has been able to assist the university in different ways and meet people from different backgrounds.

Choosing to study abroad was a huge decision for me as there were so many things I needed to prepare for, but I settled well with university life.

Providing solutions to global problems

Akshya has seen first-hand how the subject of computer science can impact people’s lives in enormous ways. In one of his former technical roles, he coordinated a platform for the government to map resources for pre- and post- disaster incidents, which meant people in disaster-struck areas in every part of Nepal could be worked with.

It is Akshya’s ambition to continue to use his subject in ways that contribute to society. He aspires to again work in Nepal, bringing technology to remote areas of the country and innovating the solutions that will support the daily lives of people, particularly with regards to agriculture.

He values the advanced knowledge he is gaining from his Master’s degree and is looking forward to applying it in his future endeavours.
