Why I chose Electrical & Electronic Engineering
I always knew I wanted to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering, but I needed the flexibility to study part‑time due to personal circumstances. While researching universities on Whatuni, I discovered that the University of Greenwich was one of the few UK institutions offering part‑time pathways in Engineering.
When I attended an Open Day at the Medway Campus, the friendly, supportive and approachable staff immediately stood out. That experience gave me the confidence I needed to commit to studying at Greenwich.
First impressions that sparked my interest
I’m a UK student, and my first connection with Greenwich came during a visit to the Royal Observatory. That day gave me a first glimpse of the Greenwich Campus and sparked my curiosity to learn more about the university.
Later, visiting the Medway Campus confirmed my decision. The campus atmosphere was welcoming and reassuring, and I quickly felt that this was the right environment for the next stage of my academic journey.
Exploring the PG FastTrack route
While completing Level 6 of my undergraduate degree, I explored the PG FastTrack route to the MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence for Engineering. The online application was clear and straightforward, and I felt well supported throughout the process.
As a FastTrack applicant, I was eligible for the Greenwich Progression Bursary. The University contacted me several times to discuss - small gestures that made the process feel personal and supportive. I recognise how valuable the bursary is for students who continue to postgraduate study.
Life on campus and getting involved
Beyond my studies, I’m an active Student Ambassador, a role that has allowed me to meet people across the university and gain experience that will stay with me long after graduation. I previously took part in the Mathematics Society which was a great way to connect with peers.
I’m genuinely proud of the Ambassador scheme at Greenwich. It’s one of the strongest in the UK; well-structured, highly active and full of meaningful opportunities. I regularly recommend it to prospective students because it has had such a positive impact on my university experience.
Living and travelling as a part‑time, mature student
I live at home in Northwest London and travel to Medway via the tube followed by the university inter-campus coach. Studying part‑time has been a real advantage for me. My previous professional and learning experiences have helped me approach my studies with greater focus and independence.
I have not faced major challenges as a mature or part‑time student, the flexibility has been one of the highlights of my experience.
Supporting others through STAART and Job Shop roles
In addition to my Ambassador work, I am a STAART Ambassador, supporting disabled students, students with long term health conditions and those with specific learning differences. Led by Dr Melanie Thorley, STAART has given me some of the most meaningful experiences of my time at Greenwich.
Working across several roles has helped me build confidence, develop new skills and feel deeply connected to the university community.
My future ambitions
After completing my course, I hope to progress to a PhD in Electronic Engineering. I’m particularly interested in supporting archaeological research - especially palaeography - by applying engineering methods to the study and preservation of ancient scripts and artefacts.
What makes Greenwich special
Greenwich stands out for its exceptional flexibility. Few universities offer such extensive part-time, sandwich or extended study options, which makes higher education accessible to students balancing work, family and other commitments.
Another major strength is the Student Ambassador programme. While many universities offer limited ambassador roles, Greenwich has a large, well supported scheme at the heart of its employability strategy. It provides paid experience, training and frequent opportunities to contribute to university life.
Advice for future students and mature learners
If you’re considering studying at Greenwich, especially as a mature or part-time student, I strongly recommend attending an Open Day. Visiting Medway made the decision clear for me. Meeting the staff, experiencing the facilities and getting a feel for the campus gives a level of insight you simply can’t get online.

Final Thoughts
One final thing I’d highlight is the University’s commitment to employability. Alongside traditional careers support, Greenwich is home to the Generator, a dedicated enterprise team helping student entrepreneurs develop and launch business ideas. I’ve seen inspiring success stories through my work as a Student Ambassador, and it’s a fantastic resource for any student with creative or entrepreneurial ambitions.
