Study a distance learning postgraduate course in haematology

The University of Greenwich’s online MSc Haematology programme has enabled Samuel Tawiah Jeffrey to study towards a postgraduate qualification whilst working as a medical laboratory scientist in Ghana.

The University of Greenwich offers several flexible online postgraduate modules in haematology – a perfect option for individuals already working within the health sector locally, nationally or internationally, who wish to enhance their existing knowledge and better understand the latest developments and technologies for career progression. Courses on offer range from a 12-week CPD modules, to PGCert and PGDip, shorter postgraduate awards made of 2 and 4 modules respectively, to a Master’s degree that can take up to seven years to complete. After studying two undergraduate degree courses in Ghana in Science Laboratory Technology and Medical Laboratory Science, Samuel applied to study the MSc Haematology course with the University of Greenwich. He describes the course as a journey into the heart of medicine, due to blood being central to almost every aspect of human health. Samuel continues to work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Ghana.

Samuel says his interest was piqued for the subject of haematology during his undergraduate degrees and modules around blood disorders and how these can be detected through blood tests.

Whether it’s through developing new treatments or improving diagnostic methods, haematology is a field where you can contribute to meaningful advancements in healthcare. This subject not only deepens your understanding of medical science but also allows you to directly improve patients' lives, which is ultimately why I chose to pursue it.

Training informed by health care partners

Lecturers on the course have worked in healthcare settings and are trained to support students online. The course itself is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science. Samuel describes the teaching led by the tutors on the course as ‘invaluable’ and a ‘highlight’ of studying the course at Greenwich. When applying for the course, Samuel says staff answered all of his queries promptly, leading to a smooth application process, and Samuel says the course has been a perfect match so far with his career goals. He has valued broadening his perspective through learning about UK processes and systems and he has been able to implement his learning to his workplace.

I have improved my competence in technical aspects of haematological practice as well as understanding of legislation. I have already started educating some critical clinical staff and implementing some measures to ensure total quality within the health service delivery chain in my facility with support from management.

More flexibility with distance learning

Samuel praises the flexible approach to the online postgraduate degree course, which has enabled him to study the course from 7000km away alongside a cohort that includes other international students, whilst still progressing in his career.

Being a distance learning student gives me more flexibility and means I can attend tutorials and engage in all academic activities whilst still actively working in my country... This global perspective is crucial in a field like haematology, where developments and advancements are constantly emerging worldwide.

The University of Greenwich offers similarly structured MSc degrees in Biomedical Science, Healthcare Management and Healthcare Quality Management.
