Top ten reasons to live in the Medway student halls

Check out our top reasons to live in the student halls on our Medway Campus.

  1. Surround yourself with the beautiful and mindful scenery of our Medway Campus. We’ve invested in our landscaping, bringing you lots of green spaces to enjoy. Imagine waking up, taking a short walk past the intricate redbrick buildings (a former naval barracks) that make up our campus. The trees that line Central Avenue change with the seasons and squirrels are no strangers to our historic site! Crunch through orange leaves on your way to your lessons in the autumn or walk under blossoms in the spring, look out for frosty rooftops and the gorgeous real Christmas trees in Pembroke and Pilkington in the winter season, and schedule in study sessions on Pembroke Lawn in the summer. We have newly refurbished tennis courts available to use for free, a gym on site with low membership cost, and Medway Park Leisure Centre is  within walking distance.
  2. Great buildings to live in. We’ve recently invested £700,000 on our accommodation at Medway Campus. This included refurbishment of our Merlin Block C and Sunne Accommodation Block. The revamp included installation of new kitchens, flooring, decorating the walls in the flats and within the bedrooms. As part of our commitment to inclusivity, we have also upgraded our fully accessible flat with ensuite wet rooms. All rooms come with an ensuite. Communal kitchens and dining areas have everything you need and are a great space to gather with your flatmates.

  1. Live close to your studies. If you’re a pharmacy, science, or engineering student, our halls on the Medway Campus mean you can set the alarm for just before your lectures and still make them on time!
  2. Our regular inter-campus bus service. If your studies are in Greenwich, don’t worry – our inter-campus bus service has you covered with regular coaches departing from the bus stop on Central Avenue. You’ll be on the Greenwich Campus in around 45 minutes depending on traffic. Just remember to check the bus times before you travel. The coach is also a great option, and very reasonably priced,  if you’re a Medway student and fancy a day in Greenwich to make use of the extensive facilities there, including the Stockwell Street Library, or just for a change of scenery and a day out at a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
  3. 24/7 security. We’re lucky to have the Gatehouse on Central Avenue, staffed 24/7 by our security staff, who are also first aid trained. Contact them with the click of a button at any time via our safety app, Safe Zone. We’ve also recently enhanced external lighting across all accommodation areas, making our spaces even more secure and reassuring for our student community.
  4. Get the support you need with our helpful Accommodation Office. If you’re experiencing any issues, you can pop to the Office in Blake Building and get answers to your questions or help. There is also a designated member of staff on duty during the night.

  1. Late night study sessions. The Drill Hall Library on the Medway Campus has extended opening hours, including hours until midnight. Get that assignment finished with a late cramming session and no need to worry about your journey home. (Check out the website to check opening hours which can change throughout the year).
  2. So much to do in the local area. Medway is a large area and is a thriving hub in commuting distance of London. Enjoy festivals and events on your doorstep including the Proms, Dickens Festival and Sweeps Festival at Rochester, Armed Forces Day, Medway Food and Drink Festival and more. Check out our article ‘top ten things to do close to Medway’ for our personal favourite places to visit and activities to try.
  3. So many friends to meet and a great student experience to enjoy. It’s very unusual to have three universities sharing a campus, and that’s what we have here at the Medway Campus, which is shared with University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church. And with a wide range of societies to choose from, and the on-campus student bar The Deep End, which is open until late and hosts regular club nights , themed events and activities, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet your new friends and build your confidence.
  4. Spaces for connection and belonging. We’ve added benches and tables around each accommodation block. These are in addition to other spaces on campus you can meet with friends, including Pembroke Café, Pilkington Café, The Archibald Mess Hay, and benches on campus include those on Pembroke Lawn and our Buddy Benches.
