A rewarding course
As a final year student of BSc Chemistry, I have found the studies to be demanding but extremely rewarding. There have been a variety of different topics and areas of chemistry taught, which has been crucial for exploring and identifying the areas I enjoy the most, such as Organic Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis. The course has been both personally interesting and helpful for experience in the chemistry industry, which is where I wish to pursue my career.
My studies, especially my dissertation regarding the conformational analysis of cyclic diamides, have confirmed my strong interest in laboratory activities and research. I have worked very hard alongside fantastic fellow students and reputable lecturers.
My dissertation in the study of spectroscopic characterisation of six- and ten- membered ring systems of cyclic diamides in solid state and aqueous solution is highly relevant to society because diketopiperazine has many uses in therapeutics for cancer, preterm labour and HIV.
In addition to this, I have taken part in multiple extra-curricular hobbies at Greenwich, like Pool and Trampolining, and I have assisted with university Open Days and outreach events for the past couple of years, meeting parents and prospective students interested in the area of chemistry, answering any questions they may have and describing university life. It is always a wonderful experience for staff and students alike to see prospective students interested in what we do.
Broaden your horizons
I chose the University of Greenwich for a number of reasons. Located on the Medway Campus, the university is conveniently positioned within an hour’s travel to my hometown of Folkestone, allowing a manageable journey to and from home. In addition, it has allowed to me to broaden my horizons and opportunities outside of my hometown to extend my independence, provide me with the moving out of home experience and the adult responsibilities that come with it.
I was definitely drawn in by the amazing facilities on the campus. The laboratories are top-class with access to numerous advancing technologies in the chemistry sector, and the impressive Drill Hall Library, considered to be the longest library in Europe, took my notice for sure. Greenwich has always had a good reputation for the sciences.
A building block for a career in science
There are so many different areas of chemistry to find interest in: Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Formulation, Thermal, etc., and these all relate very closely with the other sciences in theory. Chemistry allows a close combination of practical experimentation and theory understanding and is a highly esteemed degree to obtain.
The BSc Chemistry degree at Greenwich is very reputable and is a brilliant building block for a career in science. I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey through my degree and I could not offer more encouragement to prospective students to seize the opportunity.
I'm intending to continue with university education, pursuing a Science, Master’s by Research degree at Greenwich, and in the long-term I wish to have a laboratory-based career in research.
