Free 8Bit Video Games

While many of you wont remember the gold years of 8bit computer gaming there has been something of an 8bit game revival recently. Back in the 1980's the ZX Spectrum and the Commodore 64 were the micro computers on every kids Christmas list. This fantastic archive provides access to a wide range of old ZX Spectrum games that are still very playable today. The advantage here is that they will all play directly through your browser. I especially recommend The Hobbit text adventure, Deathchase (a sort of Star Wars speeder chase through a forest) and Lord of Midnight an fantastic fantasy strategy game. Remember, all of these were coded to run in no more than 48K of memory (1 meg of memory is 1000k!) Enjoy!

Spectrum

Of course there were other successful if slightly less popular systems. The BBC Micro gained a lot of support partly due to it having a proper keyboard and being aimed at a more educational market. That said, there were still some cracking games for it. ELITE was considered a masterpiece and eventually appeared on other machines but the BBC got it first! You can play all the best game on this platform right here:

The Internet Archive

If you enjoy reading, old classic film and TV, music, sound effects, magazine and classic video games then this fantastic free archive is for you. Here you will find an incredible selection of out of copyright resources to enjoy. Seriously, I have wasted sooooo much time here. Have fun!

The "Lone Wolf" series of books were hugely popular back in the 80's. They were solo roleplaying books that allowed the reader to make decisions and change the path of the story by directing you to different pages in the book. Still great fun and available here to enjoy online!

Enjoy a puzzle? Like an adventure? Don't mind a bit of reading then this is for you. Back in the day text adventures were a big deal and Magnetic Scrolls were one of the biggest names in the industry. Now you can play all their classic free and online!

Another blast from the 8bit past!
