Getting Closer to Nature

Natural Spaces

Here at the University of Greenwich, we have many natural spaces on or around our campuses with plenty of space to wander and relax.

Medway

At Medway there is a lawn area with seating opposite the Pembroke Building.

Some ideas

Ideas to get closer to nature include:

Get a plant for your office/room

Plants absorb CO2 and pollutants and release oxygen, thereby improving the air quality in your workspace. Find out more about biophylia here.

Take your lunch outdoors

Find a spot overlooking some greenery. Consider getting more active by joining other volunteers at the Avery Hill Community Edible Garden, plant seeds, harvest crops and even get creative by helping improve the space for people and for wildlife.

Take a walk

Head to your local green space/park and take in the peace and quiet – a brisk 10-minute walk each day has lots of health benefits. Find out more about the Avery Hill Southwood Campus Estate Trail.

Practice mindfulness

Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, breathe deeply and listen - pay more attention to the present moment, to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you.

Take meetings outdoors

Have walking meetings outside or use seating areas for outdoor meetings when the weather is nice. If it's dry, sit on the grass and touch the ground – physically interacting with nature can be therapeutic.

Socialise

Join a local volunteer group, meet friends, get exercise and learn something new – social contact and interactions will build your social network.

Research shows that connecting with the outdoors and nature can reduce stress levels, encourage physical activity, and increase social interactions - which in turn can all increase our wellbeing
