It is impossible to read a newspaper or switch on the TV without hearing about the benefits of physical activity. Staying active helps to prevent and manage multiple conditions related to not only our physical but also our mental health.
As health promotion expert Dr Nick Cavill says:
"If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented".
It is important to prioritise physical activity - something as simple as taking yourself away from your desk and going for a quick walk can really re-invigorate you, boost your focus and increase your productivity.
Activities you can do
Integrating these simple activities into your day can really help improve your physical and mental wellbeing.
- Go for a short, 10-minute burst of brisk walking to raise your heart rate and make you feel slightly breathless. This increases mental alertness, energy and positive mood states.
- Get on your feet! Being sat at a desk for hours on end day in, day out has a negative impact on your health.
Break the cycle of sedentary behaviour by incorporating the following in work or study:
- make phone calls standing up
- take regular breaks from the computer
- use the stairs
- get up and talk to people
- eat your lunch away from your desk or place of study
- walk to your colleague's desk instead of phoning them
- stand during presentations
