Student Curriculum Consultants

TLDRoffon

In collaboration with the Student Union, students are recruited as Curriculum Consultants to provide a refreshing student perspective.

Role of curriculum consultants

To work with students and staff to create an inclusive framework for student attainment at the University of Greenwich. They provide guidance to university staff by reviewing course materials, providing feedback on inclusive principles, as well as identifying best practice across the sector and develop a co-creation guide.

Benefits of working with a curriculum consultant

  • Providing a student perspective, using insights and personal experience.
  • Looking at diversity in resources as well as learning practices- lecture and seminar style etc.
  • Helping develop diverse and inclusive material for new courses.
  • Allowing you to work side by side with a student when reviewing or creating a new course

Typical tasks

  • Provide training for students on the Approval and Review Group Panel.
  • Review materials such as course handbooks, module guides, assessment instructions and online materials, including reading list audits, creating jargon busters, reviewing language used and debunking/demystifying myths.
  • Conduct focus groups/ providing support and feedback channels with students on the course in creating the inclusive framework.
  • Facilitating co-creation between staff and students to leave continuity beyond the work of the curriculum consultant.

Projects:

  • In February 2019, the students ran a student exhibition on the BAME Attainment Gap with the aim to raise awareness among students.

Testimonials from our curriculum consultants.

Our curriculum consultants Angel and Antonella have shared their perspective:

"I believe that by raising awareness of the BAME attainment gap, through the work done by the curriculum consultants, encouraging staff to look at their teaching materials in a new light and help them to address issues around inclusion in their teaching. This project also has the ability to empower students to speak up and to work with their lecturers in shaping their learning." – Angel

"All courses can benefit from a curriculum consultation, especially since the goal is creating an inclusive material and reducing the attainment gap.  Being a curriculum consultant is indeed a fulfilling job, mostly because of the feedback received from university staff; seeing tutors working alongside students in order to create a change is the only solution for this nationwide problem. I also believe the focus should be on raising awareness and making sure all students know about the BAME attainment gap, no matter their ethnical background." - Antonela
