Details of our 3 Minute Thesis panels have been announced

A mix of PhD alumni, academics and professionals will take part in our two panels at the final, which takes place on Thursday 4 April.

Our finalists will have a single static slide and 3 minutes to present their 80,000 word research. We're expecting the event to be fun and informative and everyone is welcome. To book a free ticket, visit the event page.

As well as the finals themselves, two panel discussions will be taking place as follows: 

The next phase: your career, post PhD

The panel discussion will focus on the journeys from PhD to employment. Advice and tips from panellists to prepare postgraduate research students for the workplace. What helped, what didn't help. What skills and experience, aside from a PhD, are useful to develop? What advantages does being a doctorate graduate give in the workplace? What challenges did the panellists have to overcome?

Panel members: 

  • Mary Fudge (Chair) – Employer Partnership Manager, Employability and Careers Service
  • Dr. Poppy Gibson – Programme Leader for the BA in Primary Education, Faculty of Education and Health 
  • Dr. Omer Khalid (PhD alumnus) – Senior Technical Product Manager, Facebook
  • Dr. Sreejit Pillai (PhD alumnus) – Senior Project Manager, Euro Car Parts Ltd.
  • Dr. Khosru Rahman – Principal Mechanical Analysis Engineer – Structural Integrity, BAE Systems

Publishing without perishing: managing the journey ahead

The panel discussion will provide insights into the following topics:

  • The value of being a journal reviewer – putting others ahead of yourself
  • Exercising leadership – (joint) guest editing of journal special issues
  • Networking at conferences with journal editors and members of journal editorial board
  • Taking research impact further – membership of editorial boards
  • Promoting your research after publication
  • Planning ahead for research impact in the longer term
