A day in the lives of the Haidrani twins

Twins Layla and Salma both work at the University of Greenwich, but their days look very different. While Layla helps tell the stories of our students, staff and research as a faculty Senior Communications and Marketing Officer, Salma supports students to develop their skills and career prospects in the Employability and Partnerships team.

Here's a glimpse into a typical day for each of them.

9am: Starting the day

I’m making the final touches to our internal Faculty newsletter which is sent to our professional services staff and academic staff. For the first time since launching this in June 2025, the design has changed – I’m looking forward to hearing what readers think of the new format!

I worked a journalist before my career in communications and what I love most about both careers is that I get the chance to talk to people from all walks of life – whether that’s a researcher who’s recently been awarded funding or a student who’s recently set up a new society at Greenwich.

Salma

I like to consider that I offer a tailored approach to each student but that I’m also approachable, empathetic and compassionate to all. Students pop in looking to receive feedback on their CV, support with exploring whether a Sandwich Year Placement is the right fit for them or guidance on securing a part-time role.

I can meet people from all over the world in a single morning from Spain, Italy and France to much further afield including Sri Lanka, Russia and Brazil. You never know who might just walk through the door!

11am: Supporting students and colleagues

Layla

Our team have a 30-minute marketing team stand-up as well our bigger team meeting every week. Our Faculty have quite a few key recruitment events and this week, we have our Postgraduate Open Evening at the Greenwich campus.

Later, I scan our shared inbox for staff and student stories. I usually carve out a few hours a week to draft posts for our dedicated LinkedIn account so prospective students can see what studying at Greenwich can be like.

Salma

A huge part of my day is showing students our jobs portal, TargetConnect, and equipping them with the tools to become more employable, including how to search for opportunities or signposting them to our Placements & Internships team. A service we offer here is 1-2-1 appointments with our Employability Skills Advisors so I also support students with matching them with an Advisors.

The most rewarding part of my role is receiving a message from a student thanking me for the advice and encouragement I’ve provided them with.

1pm: Lunchtime in Greenwich

Layla

After heading to the canteen for some food (where I inevitably bump into someone I know and end up chatting), I head to the park to decompress. One of the best things about working at the university is the park. It’s particularly wonderful during seasonal changes!

Salma

I love to stroll past Queen’s House every lunch. As we grew up in Regent’s Park, I’m particularly fond of Georgian style architecture.

Greenwich has such a rich architectural heritage so I try not to take it for granted. I started this role during the heatwave and it’s been sublime to see the transition from late autumnal foliage to the onset of winter.

2pm: Afternoon projects

Layla

I'm currently working on a project sharing the experiences of Faculty of Education, Health and Human Sciences students who took part in the Global Greenwich Summer School. Our students get the chance to travel to some amazing places from Korea, Indonesia and Sri Lanka – one lucky Health student even got the chance to spend two weeks in Fiji!

Some of our students can be quite shy so I’m using my persuasion skills to see who is comfortable getting behind the camera to speak about their experiences!

Salma

Though our main remit is supporting students with accessing employment and equipping them with the tools to become more employable, I do signpost students to relevant departments, from Wellbeing, Funding and Scholarships and Legal Advice.

While the main remit of our work here is to support students to become more employable, I’ve found that there is a crossover with these departments. This has required me to build relationships with different teams so that I can escalate cases. It’s hugely rewarding to support students and I look forward to continuing this.

5pm: Home time

Layla

I usually write down anything outstanding or urgent for the next day. By the end of the day, I’m usually craving a sweet treat, so I pop by Paul Rhodes to get some baked goods to take home (hopefully they have cinnamon buns left!)

Salma

Post-work, you’re most likely to find me at a film or art gallery. I attended the launch of ‘Punjab’s Great War: Recruitment, Remembrance and Recollections’ at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery and it was so poignant to learn more about the region’s often overlooked military contributions to British history.
