Academic Workload Planning

TLDRoffon

The Academic Workload Planning (AWP) tool is now live and ready for 2023/24 academic information. AWP has been in use for the 2022/23 academic year.

Academic users and the Management group of AWP have reviewed the use of the tool during the current academic year in preparation for 2023/24. There have been many successes in using the AWP tool and associated processes during its roll-out. We have also listened and made numerous changes and adjustments following feedback from users.

You can access the system via the link to the AWP page using single sign on (SSO) in the same way you would do with the Horizon system. If you have any problems with logging in, please email AWPsupport@greenwich.ac.uk.

You can continue to submit feedback throughout the forthcoming year via our online feedback form and the dedicated AWP email AWPsupport@gre.ac.uk managed by our committed AWP team.

Workload Allocations

Your Line Manager should have a discussion with you about your workload allocation during your appraisal. Once your workload allocation has been entered into the system, you should receive an automated email notification informing you that it is published and ready for you to review.

The principles which have guided this project remain the core focus:

  1. Implementing a standardised and user-friendly university-wide academic workload planning approach that is fair, equitable and transparent and promotes positive well-being.
  2. Enabling effective academic planning across departments that is agile and directly informs decisions about resource planning
  3. Delivering effective management information that can inform strategic prioritisation and drive efficiency and improved performance
  4. It will also allocate workloads on the basis of hours rather than points.

Here we share our FAQs about AWP.

Dedicated feedback form (updated 25/7)

We have a dedicated feedback form that can be used to provide ongoing feedback. This feedback form is for providing feedback on the approach to the academic workload, the usability of the tool, the tariff framework and the allocation process. For any technical issues with the AWP system please email AWPsupport@gre.ac.uk

Training

We have continued to deliver training sessions throughout the current academic year for existing and new staff, including Introductory sessions, Drop In sessions plus Refresher and Update briefings.  These events will continue during 2023/24 keeping all users of the AWP tool up-to-date with any system or process changes. Training for Line Managers and designated Allocators will continue, training for academics receiving a workload will be after Clearing, dates to be announced.

AWP Framework and Guidance (updated 12/05/23)

We are now sharing the tariffs and guidance document with all academic colleagues. It’s important to highlight that these are live documents and we expect them to evolve as we review feedback during 2023/24.

There is also Technical Guidance for Line Managers which can be used as a manual to navigate using the AWP system.
