In my welcome message earlier this term, I spoke about the importance of creating a university where everyone feels respected, included and able to thrive. This commitment sits at the heart of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EqDI) work and guides the actions we take across the university.
In this article, I'd like to share two important initiatives that support this work: our new EqDI Strategic Action Plan and Belonging video. Together, they highlight both our ambitions for the future and the experiences that help make Greenwich a welcoming community for all.
How we’re guiding our EqDI work
We recently launched our new EqDI Strategic Action Plan, which sets out our ambitions for creating a more inclusive university for students, staff and alumni.
The plan focuses on three key priorities:
- Inclusive Environment: Creating a safe, accessible and inclusive environment, both on campus and online, where everyone can learn, work and succeed
- Building Belonging: Strengthening connections across our community so that every student feels welcomed, valued and proud to be part of Greenwich
- Inclusive Practices: Embedding inclusion into everything we do, including teaching, learning, support services, curriculum development and student experiences

What this means for you
Our university is committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive at Greenwich. Through our EqDI Action Plan, we'll continue to focus on:
- Creating learning experiences that are inclusive and accessible for all
- Tackling barriers that can affect student success
- Helping students build connections, communities and a sense of belonging
- Improving wellbeing and support throughout the student journey
- Supporting positive outcomes during your studies and beyond graduation
- Ensuring students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to fulfil their potential
Our goal is simple: to ensure every student feels respected, included and proud to be part of the Greenwich community.
Belonging at Greenwich
One of the key priorities within the action plan is Building Belonging, recognising the important role that connection, community and inclusion play in the student experience.
Belonging means feeling that you are accepted, valued and able to be yourself. It comes from the friendships we build, the communities we join, the support we receive and the opportunities we have to contribute to university life.
Earlier this year, we launched our Belonging campaign, which celebrates the people, experiences and stories that make Greenwich such a diverse and welcoming community.
As part of the campaign, we created a short film exploring what belonging means to members of our university community.
We'd love to hear your story. If you'd like to share what belonging at Greenwich means to you, please contact us at equality@gre.ac.uk .
Best wishes,
Banji
