Join us as we celebrate and observe Transgender Day of Visibility on Friday 31 March. The day is dedicated to recognising and celebrating the accomplishments and resilience of transgender and non-binary individuals, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face in their daily lives.
Transgender and non-binary people make up approximately 0.5% of the population in England and Wales according to the 2021 census, which means many people do not have personal connections with someone who identifies as such. This lack of visibility can lead to misconceptions and misunderstandings, which can create issues of inequality within our society towards a minority group.
Furthermore, hate crimes against transgender and non-binary people are currently at a record high, with an increase of 56% in the year ending March 2022 from the year ending March 2021, and 88% of trans people stating they do not feel confident in reporting these to the police. This highlights the importance of Transgender Day of Visibility in dispelling fear and confusion around a minority group.
Inclusivity at Greenwich
At the University of Greenwich, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates the differences that make us all unique. As part of our 2030 strategy, we strive to create a fully inclusive environment that does not simply tolerate differences but embraces them in all their wonderful ways.
We are proud of our Stonewall Top 100 LGBTQ+ Friendly Workplace listing and are working hard to continue to demonstrate why we are deserving of that title.
Show your support
We encourage all members of the University of Greenwich community to support their transgender and non-binary colleagues in the workplace.
There are many ways to do this, and we encourage everyone to visit Stonewall's Workplace Trans Inclusion Hub for guidance on being an LGBTQ+ ally and using pronouns in the workplace:
Let us continue to celebrate and uplift transgender and non-binary individuals not just on Transgender Day of Visibility, but every day.
